Looking for a new brand of vape juice to try out? Consider this article your sign to try something new. We take pride in curating our stores with some of the best vape juice brands in Canada—below are five of the best brands available in 2024.
There are so many incredible vape juice brands available in Canada; it can be hard to know where to start. For our money, these five companies are making the most creative, delicious, and varied vape juice on the market:
Let’s dive into what each of these brands brings to the table:
Lemon Drop has one focus—creating lemonade-based e-liquid with a variety of different fruits. It has everything from classic flavours like Blue Raspberry Lemonade to more unconventional combos like Blueberry Lemonade. It also offers many of its flavours iced for those who like menthol flavour in their vape juice.
Available in both salt nicotine and freebase nicotine formulas, you can enjoy Lemon Drop in concentrations ranging from 0 mg/ml to 20 mg/ml of nicotine. A great brand for lemonade lovers!
Love Lemon Drop’s “all lemonade, all the time” flavour concept—but feel like you’d enjoy the sweet and sour taste of blue raspberry as a base instead?
Enter Berry Drop—Lemon Drop’s sweeter cousin and our pick for one of the weirdest and best vape juice brands Canada has to offer in 2024. With flavours ranging from Red Apple to Dragon Fruit, you wouldn’t think the “all blue raspberry, all the time” concept would work as well as it does—but we’ve been blown away by it.
For now, Berry Drop is exclusively available in freebase nicotine format—but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a salt nic formulation hit the market soon.
Fruitbae is one of our oldest and most popular brands—its liquids, true to the name, all have fruity flavours. Some of their most popular flavours include:
The incredibly sweet, almost candy-like flavour of Fruitbae’s liquids makes them an excellent choice for people who want a delicious, sugary vaping experience—without wanting to go for pure dessert flavours.
Fruitbae’s liquids come in both freebase nicotine and salt nicotine formulations, with concentrations ranging from 0 mg/ml to 20 mg/ml. There’s really something for everyone in its lineup—that’s why it’s an old favourite of ours!
Canada is the opposite of a tropical country—maybe that’s why we love the flavours of the tropics. Banana Bang offers the flavours of a tropical paradise, even in the middle of winter. All of its flavours are made with a banana base.
Like Berry Drop, you’d think that would work sometimes—Pineapple Coconut and Blueberry Raspberry are obvious choices—but not all the time. Surprisingly, Apple Grape makes a great mix with banana, as does Lemon Lime.
Banana Bang has iced and non-iced variants and comes in salt nicotine and freebase formulations. Like most of the popular brands, you can get it in anything from 0-20 mg/ml concentrations.
VICE became popular through its brand of disposable vapes, which became known for its intense flavours. The good people at VICE decided to capitalize on this and created VICE Salts.
We’re glad they did.
VICE Salts maintain the powerful flavour profile of disposable vapes. Its e-liquid line comes in a huge variety of flavours, from Honeydew Blackberry Ice to Raspberry Grape Lemon Ice. (VICE likes ice. That’s alright by us—so do we.)
As the name suggests, VICE Salts are only available in salt nicotine formulations—from 12 mg/ml to 20 mg/ml.
At Cold Turkey Vape Shop, we have Lemon Drop, Berry Drop, Fruitbae, Banana Bang, VICE Salt, and dozens of other vape brands—all in stock, online or in-store.
Looking for candy flavours? We’ve got those. How about liquids that are high VG, low PG—or high PG, low VG? We’ve got those too. Salt nic? Freebase? Tropical? Dessert? Mint? Tobacco?
Here at Cold Turkey Vape Shop, we’ve got it all. For the best brands available in Canada, visit us online or in-store today.
]]>Each STLTH 8K Pro device comes with:
When you purchase your STLTH 8K Pro, check the packaging to ensure that all of the above are functional. To use the device upon purchase, simply:
The STLTH 8K Pro does not come with a charger—you’ll need to purchase a USB-C-type charger separately. Fortunately, most people already own a USB-C-type charger.
The STLTH 8K is incredibly easy to use; the device should be fully charged at the point of purchase. In order to use it, simply:
Using your STLTH device is as simple as that; no refills are required. In many cases, you may not even need to charge your STLTH device, though that depends, in part, on how frequently you use it.
Remember to follow the following vaping tips to make your experience with your new STLTH device as pleasant as possible:
Your STLTH device comes with adjustable airflow; out of the packaging, the device is set to maximum airflow. There is a slider on the device that allows you to adjust airflow; adjust it until you get a hit that you’re comfortable with.
When the battery indicator light displays , the device needs to be recharged. The STLTH 8K does not come with a USB-C charger, so you’ll need to purchase your own. USB-C is the industry standard for many devices, such as Android phones, so it’s likely you’ll already have the appropriate charger.
While charging, the LED screen will be on, and the current device battery level will be displayed. When your STLTH device is fully charged, the LED screen will turn off. You can then unplug it and use it again.
During use, the LED screen will display the battery level and e-liquid levels. The e-liquid indicator will change colour based on the amount of e-liquid in the device:
When the device is solid red, there’s not much e-liquid left; this could result in dry or burnt-tasting hits. As such, you may want to dispose of the device as soon as the indicator reaches solid red.
The STLTH 8K cannot be refilled; it must be replaced. Safely dispose of your STLTH 8K, then purchase a new one.
Your STLTH device comes with many safety features, including:
Do not store the device:
As a battery-powered electronic device, your STLTH 8K should not be disposed of with your regular household waste disposal service. Instead, bring it to an applicable recycling point—here in Winnipeg, a 4R Depot would be appropriate.
STLTH also has an extensive vape recycling program - you can recycle your STLTH device at some Cold Turkey locations, as well as at various Shell, Petro Canada, and Circle K locations throughout Winnipeg - and at many other stores. Recycling your vape is important; batteries can catch fire and leech hazardous chemicals when disposed of in the trash.
You should empty your vape of all e-liquid and deplete the battery before recycling your vape. Don’t worry about disassembling the vape - STLTH’s recycling partners will handle that for you.
There is a more extensive troubleshooting section in the FAQ at the end of this manual. When there’s a defect, you can contact STLTH at:

Below are some of the signs of a defective device:
STLTH devices come with a limited 1-year warranty; click the link provided for more information.
The STLTH 8K disposable holds 14 mL of e-liquid; this means most users will get around 8000 puffs from each device.
Your STLTH 8K device will last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks; it depends on the frequency of use, the size of your puffs, and other factors.
Your STLTH may not be charging because it’s plugged into an incompatible power source. Try plugging the charger into a different power source—your computer’s USB port or another charger. You can also try switching your charging cable. Finally, try using a dry cotton swab to brush debris or residue off the charge contacts of your STLTH device and charger.
Your LED screen will display battery levels while charging; when it’s fully charged, the LED screen will turn off.
Your STLTH 8K device should only blink when it’s out of e-liquid; when it does, the LED screen on the device will blink red. This should typically not occur when the device is charging.
]]>The new provincial excise tax will match the federal excise tax. The current federal excise tax is $1 for every 2 mL for the first 10 mL, then $1 for every 10 mL after that. Once the provincial excise tax has been implemented, importers and manufacturers will pay $2 for every 2 mL for the first 10 mL, then $2 for every 10 mL after. The Government of Manitoba anticipates introducing the tax by July 1st, 2024.
“Consumers can expect to see an increase in the price of vaping products if the plan to double the excise tax goes through,” said a representative for Cold Turkey Vape Shop. “A 30 mL bottle of e-liquid is currently subject to $7 in excise tax; after the change, the same bottle will be subject to $14 in excise tax. Our customers may also notice a new excise sticker on their products once the tax is implemented. Vaping products have a long shelf life, so consumers who want to avoid paying higher prices could consider buying in bulk now.”
Cold Turkey Vape Shop started as a one-shop operation in Winnipeg, dedicated to helping grow the fledgling vape market as an alternative to cigarettes. Today, Cold Turkey has five locations in Winnipeg, with a sixth on the way. It has an online shop offering deliveries throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba and five locations strategically placed throughout Winnipeg to give its customers better access to its stores. ]]>Here’s the good news—STLTH vapes are incredibly easy to clean, and cleaning them semi-regularly will lead to higher-quality hits and a longer lifespan for your STLTH device.
That’s a pretty good deal if you ask us. Follow this guide—we’ll teach you exactly how to clean your STLTH device.
Here’s what you’re going to need to get started:
To start, clean the connectors that connect your pod to your STLTH device. For a relatively clean device, simply take your cotton swab and gently clean the area around the connectors, as well as the connectors themselves. (The connectors are found in the area where you attach the pod).
For devices with a bit more buildup, we recommend using isopropyl alcohol. You don’t need to soak your cotton swab in isopropyl; a little goes a long way. Again, clean around the connectors, then gently clean the connectors themselves. You’ll also notice connectors on your pod—you can also clean those if it’s a reusable pod (or a disposable one that somehow accumulated a lot of buildup).
Your charging port might fill up with lint or other material. You can clean that out with a toothpick or a safety pin, being careful not to scratch the electronics. You can also use a can of compressed air to blow out anything blocking the port.
Finally, we recommend clearing out the airflow holes on the sides of the vape. Remove the pod before cleaning these, then use a safety pin, toothpick, or compressed air to clean the holes.
With that, most of the work is already done! You can gently dust your vape with a microfibre cloth, too, if you feel so inclined.
You’ll rarely need to clean your STLTH pod, but if you have a refillable pod or you’re experiencing spitback, you may need to clean your pod.
The first step is to remove the white cover on the top of your pod. You can do this by wiggling the cover back and forth; it takes a bit of elbow grease, but it can be well worth it. You’ll see a cotton ring on the inside of the pod, around the mouthpiece. Remove it with a toothpick or safety pin, place it on a paper towel, then wipe it.
From there, you can clean the chimney of the pod with a cotton swab—start with a dry swab, and only use isopropyl if there’s a lot of buildup. Wait at least 30 minutes before using your vape after applying isopropyl—you don’t want to inhale alcohol when you’re hitting your vape!
We recommend cleaning your STLTH device at least once a month. You should also clean as needed; if you’re experiencing spitback, weak hits, or no hits, cleaning is one of the first troubleshooting steps you should take.
Cleaning your STLTH device is just one way to get the most out of it. Here are a few other best practices to keep in mind:
We have a wide variety of STLTH pods and STLTH devices available here at Cold Turkey. You can visit us online or in person at any of our many locations across Winnipeg. We can help you pick the perfect flavour, give you more tips on maintaining your STLTH device, and much more.
We look forward to seeing you!
]]>These vapes are both quite popular, and each has its own advantages. We have our favourite, but before we tell you what it is, we want you to develop your own opinion. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each vape; after that, we’ll give you our thoughts on who wins!
Here are a few of the key takeaways before we delve into the meat of this comparison:
STLTH and JUUL are two of the most well-known closed pod vapes on the Canadian market. They’re popular for several reasons:
For these reasons, STLTH and JUUL are both extremely popular among vapers and people who want to switch from smoking to vaping. Brand recognition plays a huge part, too.
With that in mind, let’s get into the in-depth comparison!
The STLTH closed pod system is closely modelled on the JUUL system—JUUL was the first closed pod system, after all. As we’ve mentioned a few times, it’s a Canadian company, so its presence is really only known in the Canadian market.
We’re big fans of how STLTH has iterated on the classic closed pod design, and not just because it’s one of our best sellers.
When compared to the JUUL, the STLTH is larger and taller. STLTH did this because it wanted to have a bigger battery and larger pods than the JUUL. The STLTH has almost double the JUUL’s battery capacity and holds more juice.
There are several advantages to the STLTH system, including:
While we love it, STLTH pods and devices aren’t perfect. Here are a few disadvantages:
There are an incredible number of different STLTH flavours; here’s a small handful of our favourite flavours (it’s just the tip of the iceberg):
The nice thing about a closed pod system is that you can swap flavours all while keeping your STLTH device—there’s a lot less waste than you might get from a disposable.
JUUL is the grandaddy—it is the originator of closed pod systems and one of the first to introduce salt nic e-juice that you see in so many different devices. It offers a sleek, discreet vape that’s well constructed, with a large variety of different flavours.
There are a lot of things we like about the JUUL—it is smaller and more discreet than the STLTH (despite their names), and the quality control is a bit better. There are disadvantages, too, though!
Here are some of the advantages of JUUL:
JUUL recently pulled most of its flavours from the Canadian market—this means it has significantly fewer options for flavours than STLTH.
For us, the STLTH system is the clear winner. While the JUUL may have a bit more consistency in manufacturing, the STLTH vape offers more different flavours of e-juice, a larger battery, and bigger pods—all for less than it costs to buy JUUL products.
Our goal is to help our customers come to informed decisions. While we think that STLTH makes the best pod system in Canada, you might find the JUUL draws better or offers a better user experience. There are other devices on the market, too—closed pod systems are becoming more and more popular. You could also try the new LEVEL X or STLTH Pro closed pod systems!
JUUL and STLTH are both safer alternatives to traditional tobacco products, and smokers wanting to quit may find success with either system. Looking to try your first closed pod system? Visit Cold Turkey online or in-store today!
]]>We all want our vapes to last for as long as possible—but all good things must come to an end, especially when you’re using disposable vapes.
For non-disposable vapes, checking to see if your vape is empty is pretty easy—you open up the tank or pod and see how much juice is left in there, and if there isn’t enough, you simply just refill it.
Disposables, on the other hand, are usually constructed in a way that makes looking into the tank next to impossible. In this article, we’re going to explore some of the signs that your disposable vape may be empty.
The most obvious sign that your vape pen is empty is that, when you go to take a hit, there’s very little vapour to no vapour that comes out. Obviously, empty vape pens can’t produce vapour, so if your vape is hot but no vapour is coming out, you’ll need to get a new disposable vape (or refill your refillable vape).
You might get a little vapour from your vape pen, but if there’s no flavour at all to it, that means there’s no juice. Generally, if you can produce vapour, but there’s no flavour, it means you’re starting to burn your coil or cotton wick—and you do not want to inhale those vapours.
This is basically the same problem that we mentioned above, but worse. The little vape juice left in your vape is overheating, or the coil and wick are burning—that’s going to leave you with a nasty taste in your mouth, and it’s a good sign that your vape is out of juice (though it could, rarely, also be a problem with the coil or wick).
Another indicator that you’re running low on juice is when a complex flavour has become simplified—like if you’re only tasting the menthol from your tropical ice e-juice. This means most of the juice is gone, and there’s just a hint left on the coil; it’s time to get a new disposable.
Sometimes, vape manufacturers make life easy. They’ll put an indicator light to tell you when you’re running low on juice; if you’ve got one and it’s flashing, it means your time with your disposable vape is up.
This isn’t the most solid indicator because your device will become lighter as the juice becomes vapourized. A new device will, however, weigh considerably more than an old device, and if you’re very low on liquid, you may be able to tell just by holding your old vape in one hand and your new vape in another.
You know that sound you make when you’re sucking the last bit of liquid from a cup through a straw? That’s close to the sound you might hear when your vape is running out of juice; gurgling is a good signal that you’re running out of e-liquid.
When your battery is dead, your vape won’t create any vapour (and, depending on your device, you might briefly see a flashing indicator light). Here’s how to tell if you need to recharge your vape: Is your device getting warm? A warm device means a working battery; if your device is totally cold, it means your battery needs to be recharged.
Looking for a new disposable vape now that your old one is out of juice? Visit our Winnipeg St. James vape shop—one of our many locations throughout the city, and try a new disposable today!
]]>There are all kinds of different vapes on the market, from disposable vape pens to highly customizable box mods. When you’re new to vaping, the selection can seem a bit daunting—but we’re here to help.
This article will help you select the perfect vape for your needs. First, we’ll review some of the questions you should ask yourself before purchasing a vape; from there, we’ll go into a few different options that might suit your needs.
There are a lot of different reasons that people vape:
Depending on why you want to vape, here are some of the things you should be thinking about:
Disposables are among the most popular vapes; they’re convenient, affordable, and a great choice for anyone trying vaping for the first time. Most disposables have the following features:
Disposables come in a wide variety of flavours. The biggest downsides to disposables are that they’re not customizable, lead to more waste, and, over time, are more expensive than reusable vapes.
Starter kits balance the advantages of disposables and the benefits of box mods. Our starter kits are affordable and come in various styles, from sleek and discrete to large and powerful.
Our starter kits come with refillable and rechargeable devices; some offer both MTL and DTL hits. They’re a great starting point (it’s right there in the name!) for anyone who wants a more durable, sophisticated, and environmentally friendly vaping experience. You don’t need to customize starter kits, but you can— and that’s their beauty.
Box mods are the most customizable vapes. They’re usually designed for more advanced vapers—the folks who like to tinker and cloud chase. These vapes are often engineered with DTL and sub-ohm vaping in mind; you’ll have to build your own coils. These are the most complicated and least discreet vapes on the market, but they’re also by far the most powerful and customizable.
There’s a massive variety of different vapes available on the market; the one that’s right for you will vary. Here at Cold Turkey Vape Shop in Winnipeg, we have all kinds of vapes available online and in-store. You can also stop in for more advice—our staff will be more than happy to help you find the best vape for your needs.
]]>While problems with these devices aren’t common, many users have experienced weak hits, dry hits, or no hits at some point or another; STLTH’s line of vapes isn’t immune to these problems. The troubleshooting tips we offer will help you get optimal performance out of your device.
STLTH is one of the most popular vape companies in Canada. It offers both disposable vapes and pre-filled pod systems—some of the best in the market. The variety of products they offer is pretty exceptional—there’s not a bad one in the bunch.
Every vape needs a bit of troubleshooting now and then, and STLTH vapes, though well-built, are no exception. Occasionally, you might find that you’re unable to take a hit off of your STLTH vape—this troubleshooting guide will help you fix that.
The troubleshooting steps may differ depending on which STLTH device you’re using. These troubleshooting tips may help you with either type of STLTH device (disposable or pre-filled pod mod) but be advised that it’s often better to simply replace your disposable instead of trying to fix it.
With all of that in mind, here’s what to do when you find your STLTH not working:
Battery issues are the most common reason for STLTH devices not hitting. We recommend you start by checking the battery level of your device—in the best-case scenario, you’ll just need to recharge it. In some circumstances, your battery will not charge—if that’s the case, we’ll give you tips on how to fix it in the troubleshooting section below.
The popularity of STLTH devices has led to many third-party manufacturers developing their own pods for STLTH’s pod vape. These manufacturers vary in quality, and some pods for STLTH devices may be filled with lower-quality e-liquid.
As e-liquids and vapour flow through your STLTH device, you may find it becomes clogged. Many STLTH devices also come with adjustable airflow; adjusting your airflow settings may also improve your hits.
Given the sheer number of STLTH pods on the market, ending up with a defective pod isn’t unusual—though it is annoying. Buy from trusted suppliers like Cold Turkey in order to reduce the risk of defective STLTH pods.
The coil of your device may also be defective or damaged. In either case, the best move is usually to replace the device.

Now that you know what can cause your STLTH device to malfunction, we can troubleshoot the most common issues you may experience:
When your STLTH device won’t charge, it’s likely there’s a problem with your battery—in most cases, it’s that the battery isn’t properly connected to your device.
Other guides will advise you to remove your STLTH device’s battery—we do not recommend this. You’re better off to simply buy a new device, especially if you’re still within the warranty period of your vape. Battery safety is important for any electronic device—don’t take any unnecessary risks!
Pods run out of e-liquid eventually; when that happens, your best bet is to get a new pod. Simple enough! We also recommend buying your STLTH pods from trusted suppliers—you’ll get higher-quality e-liquid and a pod that lasts longer.
Many STLTH devices have adjustable airflow. You can find out if that’s the case for your STLTH device by visiting the STLTH help page, finding your device, and looking through the FAQs or user manuals.
Where possible, we recommend adjusting the airflow on your STLTH device if you’ve tried other problem-solving tips and still find you can’t take a hit. We also recommend cleaning your STLTH device, especially if it doesn’t have adjustable airflow.
When all else fails, consider replacing your STLTH pod or STLTH device. We don’t recommend trying to adjust coils or batteries—that can be dangerous. Fortunately, replacing a STLTH electronic device is relatively affordable. Defective STLTH pods are also fairly easy to replace.
We recommend checking the warranty on your STLTH pods or STLTH device—if it’s still within the warranty period, you may be able to get a free replacement.
STLTH products are high-quality and low cost—that’s one of the reasons we recommend replacement over repairs. The lifespan of a STLTH device varies depending on which one you purchase, but its non-disposable products can offer a satisfying vaping experience for years.
You might be wondering about the battery life of your STLTH device. Here’s the battery life for some of the most popular STLTH products when they’re fully charged:
STLTH PRO Pod: About 1000 hits per charge
STLTH Original: About 200 hits per charge
STLTH Original USB-C: About 300 hits per charge
STLTH 1K: About 1000 hits per charge (the total amount of liquid in the disposable)
STLTH 3K: About 3000 hits per charge (the total amount of liquid in the disposable)
STLTH 5K: About 2000-2500 hits per charge
STLTH 8K: About 3000 hits per charge
As you can see, while the battery life for your STLTH device is variable, most of the devices are pretty long-lasting.
Always ensure that your STLTH device is fully charged before attempting to troubleshoot why it’s not hitting. We recommend getting your STLTH device fully charged and using a fresh STLTH pod to see if it’s still functional—most of the time, that does the trick.
Here’s the skinny: When your STLTH device isn’t hitting properly, it’s likely due to issues with the battery, problems with your pod or device, or improper airflow. To troubleshoot, fully charge the battery, try a new pod, clean your device, and adjust the airflow. When all else fails, you can replace your STLTH device.
Need to replace your STLTH device? Visit our vape shop in Winnipeg! We have a variety of STLTH products, including pods, disposable, and pod system vapes. Don’t settle for dry hits, weak hits, or no hits at all. You deserve a satisfying vaping experience every time you choose STLTH—and our vape shop can help. Visit us online or in person today!

]]>Nicotine salts (nic salts for short) have taken the vaping world by storm. They were popularized by JUUL in 2015 and quickly became among the most popular types of e-liquids on the market.
In this article, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about nic salts—their rise in popularity, the difference between them and traditional freebase nicotine liquids, and legislation that may affect the use of nicotine salts in the future.
Nicotine salts are a compound formed when nicotine bonds with an acid. That might sound unnatural, but nicotine salts are actually found naturally in tobacco leaves—it’s the form of nicotine people were consuming for centuries until freebase nicotine was created.
Freebase nicotine occurs when nicotine that’s been extracted from tobacco leaves has been treated with a base. This makes nicotine much more bioavailable, meaning it’s easier for your body to process.
The downside to freebase nicotine is its high pH levels, leading to a harsher throat hit. A lot of cigarette smokers—and ex-smokers who have moved to vaping for health reasons—prefer this harsh throat hit.
Not everyone is looking for a harsh throat hit, though—and at high concentrations, freebase nicotine is intolerable to even those who prefer harsh throat hits. Typically, freebase nicotine juices cap out at 12-18 mg/ml—any more, and the hits would become unreasonably harsh.
Modern nicotine salts solve this problem; they’re freebase nicotine merged with acids like benzoic acid to bring them back into their salt form, reducing their high pH level. The acids used in modern nicotine salts also make them more bioavailable.
The end result? Nic salt e-juices are available in up to 50 mg/ml—a concentration that helps some heavy smokers transition more easily to vaping. However, the nicotine is capped at 20 mg/ml in Canada.
The popularity of nic salts can be attributed to two factors: Their higher nicotine concentration and the rise of pod mods and disposable vapes.
The first is easy to understand—higher nicotine concentrations can help curb nicotine cravings for people who are moving from smoking traditional cigarettes to vaping electronic cigarettes. Some people prefer higher levels of nicotine—simple!
The second is that nicotine salt formulations were used in basically all of the e-juices compatible with JUUL. Here in Canada, we have a lot of products—including e-juices and vapes—that we like quite a bit better than JUUL. Nonetheless, it was the most popular for quite some time, and many of the most popular vapes today have, in essence, duplicated its product with minor improvements.
In Canada, e-liquids with a concentration of more than 20 mg/ml are banned. This means that nic salts cannot be used to their maximum potential and that there’s little difference in concentration between an e-liquid with nic salts and an e-liquid with freebase nicotine.
More legislation, including legislation governing e-liquid flavours, may be forthcoming—such a ban is already being implemented in Quebec.
Now you know everything you need to know about nicotine salts! There are still advantages to buying them if you’re looking for a less powerful throat hit.

]]>There are people who vape, and then there are people who are into vaping—the cloud-chasers, the juice makers, and of course, the engineers and tinkerers who build their own vapes.
These are the hobbyists who brought our industry to what it is today—without them, we wouldn’t even have cig-a-likes.
We want more people to experience the joy of building their own vape. There’s an art to it—and it offers a level of customization that you can’t get from an out-of-the-box mod or a disposable. Here’s what you need to know:
Before building a vape, you’ve got to ask yourself some questions:
These questions—and others—will guide you toward the best combination of batteries, tanks, coils, cotton, and more.
There are several different mods available on the market—they contain both the batteries and the circuitry for your vape. You can find several different features on a mod, including:
Depending on the style of vaping you want to do, you’ll select between different mods. A high-wattage mod is best, and most mods built for sub-ohm vaping will feature 2 or more large removable batteries.
For stealthy vaping, on the other hand, a smaller mod with lower-wattage built-in batteries are usually best.
Broadly speaking, there are two different types of atomizers—the place where you put your e-liquid. The most popular are tanks (rebuildable tank atomizers, known as RTAs). These are vessels that hold your e-liquid, then drip it onto the coil.
Alternatively, you can choose a rebuildable drip atomizer (RDA)—with these, you drip the e-liquid directly onto the coil.
Tank atomizers are easier to use and need to be rebuilt less often. RDAs, on the other hand, offer greater control over how much liquid makes its way onto the coil and allow for stronger hits.
The type of coil you’ll choose depends largely on the tank you’ve opted to purchase. There are different features that only work with specific coil materials. Here are a few examples:
Kanthal: One of the most commonly used vape coil materials, it offers excellent consistency and can be used in coils of a wide variety of different sizes. Best for wattage vaping.
Stainless steel: Can be used for both wattage vaping and temperature control (TC). Widely available, it heats up fairly quickly.
Nickel: With a fast heat-up time, it’s great for TC vaping—but some users are allergic to it.
These are just a few of the metals available for coils. From there, you can choose coils of different sizes—some vapes even use multiple coils in order to offer the best sub-ohm experience possible.
Different resistances lead to different hits—the lower the resistance, the larger and warmer the hit will be. Building a stealthy device? Opt for higher Ohms—you’ll get a cool hit with little vapour. Want to show off with massive clouds? Go sub-Ohm.
Wicks are generally made of cotton, and proper wicking can have a very positive impact on the flavour of your hit. All natural Japanese cotton has a particularly clean flavour profile, and it’s great at absorbing e-liquids.
We’ve just shown you the tip of the iceberg when it comes to vape customization—we haven’t even delved into how different vape juice interacts with different mods. Don’t worry—we can always write an article on any of the elements you want us to expand on. Just let us know!
Don’t want to wait for our next blog to come out? Visit our Winnipeg vape shop in person—we’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
]]>There are several reasons to vape. Some people start because they’re trying to kick cigarettes. Other people love vaping because they love all the different flavours. Some are tinkerers, trying to create the next great mod or e-juice.
Then there are the cloud-chasers—those noble vapers who just want to blow massive clouds. Some of them do tricks. Most just want to create the biggest clouds.
In this article, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about cloud-chasing, from what it is to how it’s done. There’s a lot to cover—so let’s get started!
The sport and art of cloud-chasing is all about trying to create the most enormous clouds possible when vaping. Cloud-chasers create huge clouds, competing with each other in cloud-chasing competitions. The sport is relatively young, having started around 2012 on the West Coast of the United States.
Competitions are judged by a number of factors—the most important are who can create the biggest and densest clouds, though some competitions factor in creativity (tricks) and audience reaction.
People who are really into vaping (and cloud-chasing) tend to be almost religious tinkerers—a whole set of equipment has been devised just for cloud-chasing. Here are a few of the things you’ll want to look into maximize cloud production:
This is just some of the vape equipment that will help you blow bigger clouds—as you get into the hobby, you’ll find more niche equipment to improve cloud production. The complexities of building your own mod are why cloud-chasing is for advanced vapers only—unless you buy a pre-assembled mod, there’s a risk of damaging your equipment (or hurting yourself) when assembling these high-powered vape mods.
Looking to create clouds that will win a cloud-chasing competition? You don’t just need the perfect vape mod—you need the perfect vape juice. Here’s what to look for:
We’ll set you up with everything you need to produce more vapour and increase your cloud size. We’ve been in the vaping world for a long time—we’ll get you the proper equipment and the best juice for cloud-chasing. Visit Cold Turkey Vape Shop in Winnipeg, online or in-store; we’ll be happy to help!
]]>The future for the vape industry looks incredibly bright. In 2022, the industry was valued at 22.45 billion USD. With an expected growth rate of 30.6% CAGR, by 2030, the vape market should be worth around 145 billion USD (thanks to Grandview Research for the market analysis).
There are, however, a number of possible legal and cultural hurdles facing the industry. We’ve been in the vaping business for years, and if we’ve learned one thing, it’s to expect the unexpected. In this article, we’re going to dive into some of our predictions.
This is just for fun—the industry changes so rapidly it’s almost impossible to predict changes accurately. If we get a few wrong, don’t hold it against us—if we guess right, though, then remember that you heard it here first!
We’re so used to talking about PG/VG—what about good old H20? That’s what Aquios Labs wants you to think about; it’s creating water-based liquids with hardware to match.
You can’t just add water to your e-liquids; they’d dilute, and the juice would leak out of your vape. That’s why Aquios is making vapes specifically designed to handle water-based e-liquids.
We hope it’s successful—using less PG/VG and more water could lead to reduced costs for consumers, as long as the hardware costs about the same as a traditional vape. Aquios is also espousing more “hydrating” hits—we’ll believe it when we try it, but it’s something we’re excited to try!
Vaping without heat? That’s like smoking a cigarette without fire—a contradiction in terms! Right?
That’s what we thought—until we heard of ultrasonic vaping. There are no coils, no heating elements—just vibrations that vapourize the e-liquid and result in a satisfying (though much cooler) vaping experience. The leader in the ultrasonic space right now is probably SURGE.
We love vaping as harm reduction, and the absence of coils can lead to fewer allergic reactions to various metals. Ultrasonic technology also eliminates the risk of dry or burnt hits.
The Government of Canada has considered introducing legislation to eliminate most vape flavours in its efforts to reduce the rates of teen vaping. Quebec recently introduced legislation to ban flavoured vape juice; Nova Scotia introduced a ban back in 2019.
You’ll have plenty of advanced notice if the Government of Canada (or if you’re in our home province, the Government of Manitoba) decides to ban flavoured vape juice. It’s likely you’ll still be allowed to own flavoured juice—we just won’t be able to sell it to you. If you love flavoured juice and you hear that a ban is coming through, we recommend stocking up before it becomes illegal to sell your favourite flavours!
As vape stores continue to build their online infrastructure and consumers learn which vape shops are legitimate (and offer the best prices), we expect to see a substantial increase in online sales.
Cold Turkey Vape Shop has locations throughout Winnipeg—but we’ve got customers all over Canada thanks to our easy-to-use online delivery system. No matter which way you want to visit us, we’ll continue to offer innovative products as the vape industry moves forward into the future.
]]>For years, the vaping industry regulated itself without much input from the Government of Canada. We tried to ensure that age restrictions, packaging, containers, advertisement, and other facets of our products and marketing limited potential harm.
Of course, not all companies complied, but the majority of us in the industry were ecstatic when actual regulations were established through Health Canada. We’re going to take you through those laws and regulations now:
The Government of Canada has set strict limits on the age at which Canadians can use vaping products. It’s illegal to sell or provide anyone under the age of 18 with vaping products, including vapes, e-liquid, and other peripheral products. Various different provinces also have age limits. They are as follows:
British Columbia: 19
Alberta: 18
Saskatchewan: 18
Manitoba: 18
Ontario: 19
Quebec: 18
Newfoundland: 19
New Brunswick: 19
Nova Scotia: 19
Prince Edward Island: 21
Yukon: 19
Northwest Territories: 19
Nunavut: 19
These age limits are subject to change but are accurate as of the writing of this article (April 2023).
In Canada, it’s illegal to manufacture, import, package, or sell vape juice with a concentration of 20 mg/ml of nicotine or higher. This rule was introduced in the summer of 2021, which is why you may remember a time when e-liquids were being sold with higher concentrations of nicotine.
Vaping devices, vaping parts, and e-liquids with a nicotine concentration of 0.1 mg/ml or more must be packaged in child-resistant containers (CRCs). There are a number of different rules that describe what makes a container childproof (one example is a container that can only be opened with a tool that didn’t come with the container).
We won’t get into the long legal details of what makes a container childproof, and what tests those containers have to go through. Know that all of the vaping products we sell come in approved CRCs.
Producers, importers, and other entities responsible for packaging, importing, and producing vaping products must pay excise tax. These costs are often absorbed, in part, by the end consumer.
The excise tax is set at 1$ per 2 ml for the first 10 ml, then at 1$ per 10 ml. This means that a 10 ml bottle of vape juice is subject to a 5$ tax, while a 30 ml bottle of vape juice is subject to a 7$ tax.
Note that the amount of nicotine in the product does not affect the excise tax—a 30 ml bottle with 20 mg/ml of nicotine is taxed at the same rate as a 30 ml bottle with 5 mg/ml of nicotine.
There are a number of different restrictions on advertising vaping products. One of the most important of these restrictions is that vendors and other stakeholders are prohibited from advertising products in a way that can be seen or heard by minors.
That’s one of the reasons that all vaping-related sites in Canada have age verification. You’ll never see vaping products being advertised on TV, on billboards, on buses, or in any other public spaces. Most advertising occurs at the point of sale.
Other regulations on advertising vaping products exist, the most well known example of which being the health warnings that inform users of the risks of vaping.
As it stands, e-liquids with a wide variety of different flavours can be sold in Canada. The Government of Canada is, however, considering legislation which would ban the sale of most flavours of e-juice. The only flavours that might be allowed under this legislation are mint/menthol and tobacco.
Though the legislation has not yet been released, keep your eyes open—you may benefit from buying your favourite flavours before they’re banned.
Health Canada, under the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act, requires that all packaging for vapes and vaping accessories (read that in Hank Hill’s voice) is factual. While they don’t have specific legislation on expiration dates, manufacturers want you to get the most out of their products. After years of self-regulation, some manufacturers will include expiry or best-before dates on their products.
Our vape shop in Winnipeg is thrilled that the Government of Canada has introduced legislation to ensure everyone can enjoy vaping safely. We still view our products as excellent alternatives to cigarettes. While we’re not ecstatic about the potential legislation surrounding vape flavours, we’ll keep you updated on any changes. Check our blog regularly, and come visit us in person if you have any questions.
]]>The vaping industry has been around for a long time—far longer than most people think.
Vaping technology has evolved a lot over its history.
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and take a look at the evolution of vaping:
As early as the 1800s, doctors knew smoking could be harmful, but it was only in the 1900s that technology offered a way to inhale nicotine without smoking tobacco.
In 1927, Joseph Robinson was granted a patent for an electric vaporizer that he claimed was designed for medicinal compounds. He filed the patent in 1927 (though there’s no evidence the device was ever created).
This is the first time the idea of something resembling an electronic cigarette or vaping device was put to paper (so far as we know).
In 1965, a man named Herbert Gilbert (it rhymes!) was granted a patent for a smokeless, non-tobacco cigarette—what many consider to be the first e-cigarette. He built several prototypes based on this patent (which he filed for in 1963), but the product never took off.
Things start heating up quickly after that. In 1979, computing pioneer Phil Ray worked with his physician Norman Jacobson to create an e-cigarette that vaporized nicotine. In the 1990s, Jed Rose (who invented the first nicotine patch) worked on a vaping product he called “distilled smoke”.
None of these products really took off—but they paved the way for the vapes we know today.
The Volcano was released in the year 2000. That device was designed to vaporize “dry herb”—it could work for tobacco, but it was largely used to vaporize a somewhat greener leaf.
In 2003, pharmacist and smoker Hon Lik created the Ruyan, the first commercially available electronic cigarette. The origin story of the first commercially viable vape is tragic—Hon Lik began working on the device after his father (who was also a smoker) died of lung cancer.
Hon Lik’s electronic cigarettes created the mould for modern e-cigarettes and vaping devices. His device used vape juice heated by a battery-powered heating element, which is what virtually all vaping devices use to this day.
By 2006, vapes were available in Europe and, soon after, in the USA. Health authorities weren’t sure what to do with these new devices—in 2008, sales of e-cigarettes were banned in Turkey. In 2009, Australia and Jordan banned nicotine vaping devices, with Jordan citing health concerns brought up by the World Health Organization (WHO).
In the same year is a flurry of activity: Health New Zealand hosts a study (funded by Ruyan) that finds carcinogens are found in below-toxic levels in vaping devices. The Obama administration begins to create legislation to restrict nicotine and tobacco marketing—including the ability to ban flavouring.
We could talk about the complex international legislation that targets e-cigarettes for days, but let’s move on to the 2010s!
By the 2010s, a whole array of vaping devices were available on the market. E-cigarettes, box mods, and more. We had devices with temperature control (TC), a wide array of coils and wicks, and all kinds of incredible vape mods. The biggest shift in the market, however, had not yet appeared.
In 2015, Pax Labs introduced the JUUL, an e-cigarette that used nicotine salt instead of freebase nicotine. Their formulation allowed for stronger concentrations of nicotine. Its vapes were also sleekly designed and easy to use—the pod mod was born.
Today, a number of companies make pod mods—one of our favourites is STLTH, a Canadian company.
The health risks of vapes are also better understood, with a number of governments (including the Government of Canada) recognizing that evidence points to vaping as a healthier alternative to cigarettes (and, thus, as a useful smoking cessation aid).
We hope you enjoyed this brief zoom through vaping history! We’re out to make history at our Winnipeg vape shop by providing knowledgeable service, an array of top-tier products, stores around the city, and delivery.
Founded by Daniel Lofchick in 2014, Cold Turkey is a vape store designed to have something for everyone. Carrying Winnipeg’s largest selection of e-juice, it’s popular amongst veteran vapers. But the store’s knowledgeable staff is also delighted to answer questions and recommend products for newcomers to the world of vaping. Clean, well organized, and with regularly updated inventory, Lofchick believes his stores resonate with customers because they feel welcome and find something new each and every time they walk through the door.
Cold Turkey’s new Marion location will serve the greater St. Boniface and Norwood area. Conveniently located on many people’s commute to and from work, Lofchick feels confident it will soon become a community fixture, just like the other Cold Turkey locations. He believes its close proximity to a number of popular restaurants and hangouts will make it a natural stop for customers as they wind down and relax on evenings and weekends.
“No matter who you are or where you’re from, Cold Turkey opens its doors to you,” says Lofchick. “We are confident that you’ll have an excellent experience shopping with us.” Cold Turkey carries starter kits, disposables, traditional vape mods and tanks, coils and pods, STLTH closed pod systems, regular nicotine, salt nicotine, and more.
In addition to the newest Marion location, Cold Turkey Vape Shop also has locations at 1200 McPhillips St. (Maples/Garden City/Inkster), 1771 Ness Ave. (St. James), 964 St. Mary’s Rd. (North St. Vital), and 77 Edmonton St. (Broadway/Assiniboine).

]]>Every vape needs a bit of TLC, from the most complex box mods to the simplest disposables. In this article, we’re going to cover the basics of vape care and maintenance. Not every tip will apply to every vape (you don’t, for example, have to clean the coil on your disposable). Altogether, however, you should be able to apply these tips to care for your vape no matter what make or model you have.
Let’s get started:
To charge your vape safely—and to maintain your battery’s lifespan—there are a few things to keep in mind:
We’re in Winnipeg (which makes us especially cold turkeys). Winters here are brutal, so it’s important to let your vape warm up before charging it or using it. Charging a cold, dead battery can cause serious damage.

Whether you’ve got an old-school box mod or a new pod mod with a refillable or replaceable pod, you need to know how to care for your vape coil.
We’re not going to go into the details on replacing coils and the different kinds of coils here—those rules aren’t universally applicable. What we will say is that you want to give your juice enough time to saturate the coil; if you don’t, you might end up with harsh, dry hits. Our advice? Wait about 10-15 minutes after refilling your tank or pod before vaping. That will give the coil enough time to become saturated. Chain vaping can also cause dry hits if you're not letting the coil resaturate.
Your vape’s tank or pod is connected to it through contacts that need to be cleaned regularly. Doing so can reduce the chances of leakage and helps you get the most out of each draw. To clean the contacts:
Pretty simple stuff—and doing it regularly can drastically improve your vape’s performance.
We’re Cold Turkey—Winnipeg’s vape shop. Whether you’re looking for advice on caring for your vape, shopping for a brand-new device, or wanting to try a new flavour, we’ve got all the bases covered. We’ve got stores throughout Winnipeg—come visit us today!
]]>Today, we’re going to focus on four different types of vapes:
Here at Cold Turkey Vape Shop, our goal is to keep you informed—we’ve found that these four different types of vape satisfy the needs of most of our customers. We’ll cover what each vape device is, who we think it’s built for, and some of our favourite brands in each category.
Let’s get started!
Box mod vapes, also known as mod and tank vapes, were the most popular type of vape before the vaping boom in the mid-2010s.
These vapes are modular—you can swap various parts, including the battery, coil, airflow ring, coil, mouthpiece, and more. This customizability is what made box mods so popular back in the halcyon days of vaping and the reason why so many enthusiasts continue to use box mods to this day.
We’ve got a number of different mods and tanks available. Many of our customers love the L200 Geekvape mod; we’d recommend pairing it with its Cerberus Tank.
Mod and tank configurations aren’t for the faint of heart—it might take some tinkering to find the perfect configuration for your needs. We can help, though—come into the shop, tell us about how you like to vape (whether you like big clouds, harsh throat hits, and other details), and we’ll help you find the perfect configuration.
Remember—box mod vapes are not small, so these really aren’t the best tool for stealth vaping!
Refillable pod systems are the middle ground between traditional vapes and newer, disposable, or closed pod-style vapes.
These vapes tend to be small and beginner-friendly; we have starter kits available for a number of different refillable pod systems, including two of our favourites, the XROS 2 and the Caliburn series.
So what makes refillable pods so special? It’s simple—they have a built-in pod, so you don’t need to fool around with coils and tanks, but the pod is refillable, so you can use a ton of different flavours with your vape. Most refillable pods allow you to use either nic salt or regular freebase; the options are almost endless.
We recommend these vapes to people who want to try a number of different flavours, but are looking to limit their environmental impact. Using refillable pods is a bit more labour intensive (you have to clean and maintain them), but for many vapers, it’s worth the extra effort.
These vapes are a lot like refillable pod systems, except that the pods are disposable—instead of refilling them, you throw them out and buy new pods.
Closed pods are very popular—they’re easy to use, you get access to a nice variety of flavours, and you can keep using the same vape for years. There’s also less maintenance required than refillable pods.
Our most popular closed pod vape is, by far, the STLTH vape. It’s a Canadian company that makes a sleek little vape, and a huge selection of flavours to go along with it. Its pods and vapes are easy to use—but it’s the variety of pods available that really sell us on STLTH.
Disposable vapes are wildly popular. They’re the absolute easiest vapes to use—you buy them, you use them until they’re out of liquid, then you recycle them or throw them out. They’re perfect for when you’re travelling, when you forgot your vape at home, or even for anywho who just doesn’t want to bother with vape maintenance.
We have a massive selection of disposables available, from Mr.Fogs, Vice, and more. We think these are an excellent product for anyone who is new to vaping, including people who are trying to quit smoking.
]]>The M100 is also known as Aegis Mini 2—it’s called the M100 for reasons we’ll discuss as we go on.
Let’s take a look at some of the features this new vape offers:
The “M” in the name stands for “Mini”. As many of our readers know, one of the challenges of tank and mod vapes is a lack of portability—it’s one of the reasons so many people have moved to closed-pod and disposable systems.
The M100 is 85mm x 36.3mm x 28.5mm—not as small as most non-tank and mod vapes, but small enough to fit easily in your pocket.
With tank and mod vapes, there’s always the fear of leaks—that’s one of the reasons that most manufacturers haven’t even bothered to make mini versions (no one wants vape juice leaking into their pockets). Geekvape has mitigated this risk by designing the M100 and its Cerberus tanks to be as leakproof as possible. Additionally, it’s incorporated a Press Lock Protection system to prevent you from accidentally firing your vape.
Geekvape has a great reputation for building some of the most durable vapes on the market, and the M100 is no exception. This thing can take an absolute beating. It’s both shock-absorbant and water-resistant, with an IP68 rating.
There are a number of little touches that help improve its durability. The charging port, for example, comes with a flip cover to ensure that no dust or water makes its way into the electronics.
The “100” in M100 comes from its maximum wattage—100. The wattage is variable, ranging from 5W to 100W, so you can vape how you want.
This is made possible by two features—the built-in 18650 mAh battery, and Geekvape’s stabilizing tech. Most vapes see a decline in their power as their battery runs out. With the M100, you’ll get consistent draws even as the battery life nears zero.
The M100 uses USB-C for charging, and is compatible for fast charging. That means you’ll be able to fully charge your M100 in a little under an hour and a half in ideal conditions—pretty impressive stuff!
Finally, we talked about how much we like the Cerberus tank, but if that’s not your style, it’s no problem at all. With a 510 connection thread, the M100 is compatible with most tanks and RDAs.
We just sang the M100’s praises, so it’s no surprise that you can buy the M100 from our shop. That’s an option we recommend for people who have experience building their own box mod setups, as the M100 doesn’t come with a tank or other accessories. You can stop by our shop if you want tips on which accessories to purchase with your M100—we can even help you assemble your first mod and tank vape!
For those who are looking for a slightly easier option, we also offer a Geekvape Aegis Boost SE Kit that’s perfect for beginners. It’s part of the same Aegis series that the M100 is from, so you can expect a durable, user-friendly vape.
If you’re looking to get into tank and mod style vapes, we can’t recommend Geekvape’s products highly enough. Stop by one of our stores or order online—you’ll be happy with what we have to offer!
]]>Today, vapes tend to be a lot more simple—especially pod mods. Whether you’ve got a pod mod, a box mod, or a cigalike, there are some common signs that your vape isn’t working right.
Instead of browsing around old forums, use this troubleshooting guide to fix common problems!
When your vape is nothing more than a very bad flashlight, you’ve got a problem on your hands. The indicator light tells you the device is powered—but for whatever reason, that power isn’t turning your juice into sweet, sweet vapour. There are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot:
Check if the coil or pod is inserted properly and getting a good connection to the terminals. This is the most common problem—you’ll want to ensure that everything is properly connected. Turn off your vape, remove the pod or coil, then place them back, ensuring a tight fit. The portion of the coil or pod that connects to your vape’s terminals can sometimes get clogged with sugar from juice—wipe the connectors off if necessary.
Clean and wipe off any excess juice from the terminal. The battery terminal is the portion of the battery that connects to your device. Terminals can sometimes get juice or sugar crystals on them, which will impede their ability to deliver a charge. Wipe off the terminals, re-insert the battery, and try again.
Check if your device is holding charge. It’s possible that your device is holding a charge when you have it plugged in—but that the charge evaporates almost as soon as you unplug it. If this occurs, you’ll need to change your battery.
Check if the device works properly with a new coil or pod. When all else fails, you might have a defective coil or pod. Replace it, then see if your vape fires properly!
Make sure your vape is charged and turned on. We know you’ve probably already checked this, but try again. We recommend letting your vape charge for at least 10-20 minutes before checking if it can retain charge. Better yet, let it charge overnight. Once you’re sure it’s charged—most vapes will have an indicator light to tell you that they’re charging—turn it on.
Check the rest of this guide. Your battery might not be connected properly, there may be gunk on the terminals, and there may be other underlying problems. Check these things, then check the rest of this guide to troubleshoot.
Replace the battery. If you’ve tried everything else, and the vape still won’t turn on, you’ll probably need to replace your battery.
Your vape is on, it’s fully charged, the indicator light tells you you’re ready to go, you hear it working, you inhale—and nothing.
What’s going on?
Make sure the airflow collar is open. You can adjust your airflow to get bigger or smaller clouds—and if you adjust it too far, you’ll close off airflow altogether. This is especially common on box mods. Simply adjust the airflow open, and try taking a hit again!
Blow into the tank. Occasionally, air bubbles may form near the airflow that can impede airflow. By blowing into the mouthpiece, you’ll burst those air bubbles and allow for vapour to flow through.
Check your device’s wattage. Box mod coils are a lot like Goldilocks’ porridge—you don’t want them too cold, or too hot. Different wattages should be used for different coils—with some coils, you can even use temperature control. Check the material used in your coil, then adjust your wattage appropriately.
Clean your vape. When your mouthpiece, airflow, or other components are clogged, you may get substantially less vapour—or no vapour at all. Clean everything, then try again!
Try a new coil or pod. As always, you might have a problem with your coil or pod. When all else fails, replace your existing coil or pod with a new one!
Obviously, a leaky vape is a sign of a problem—or so you’d think.
Almost all vapes will leak at some point or another—after all, you’re dealing with a whole lot of fluids in a pretty complex container. Here are a few reasons why your vape might be leaking:
There’s a broken, damaged, or defective seal. Look at all of the seals in your device. Remove them, check them, then replace any defective seals.
Check the juice you’re using. There are a few different factors that can affect how juice flows through your device. First, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the right VG/PG ratio for your device and coil. We recommend this Ultimate Guide to PG/VG ratios! It will help you find the right mix for your device—and your tastes.
Check your liquid’s consistency—and sugar content. When your liquid is particularly watery—or your juice is very sugary—you’ll see more leaks. Additionally, you might find your coils burning out more quickly than usual. Changing the juice you use can help with these problems.
Replace your pod or coil. You probably saw this one coming. When your pod is defective, you might see leaks. When your coil isn’t evaporating juice fast enough, it can leak out of the mouthpiece and other sections of your vape.
Know that leaks are inevitable. You can take steps to avoid leaks—like the ones we detailed above—but it’s a matter of when, not if, you’ll get leaks.
There are basically two reasons that your vape might auto-fire—because it needs to be cleaned or because it’s damaged.
Clean the terminals and airflow collar. Condensate and sugars can accumulate near the battery terminals or the airflow—and that can send mix signals to your device, causing it to auto-fire. Clean your vape regularly, including the terminals, the space where the pod connects, and the airflow collar. This should help the issue.
Get rid of any excess juice. Too much juice can cause your device to auto-fire. Pretty straightforward.
Check your device for damage. If you recently dropped your device, or it was impacted by any other blunt force, it may have damaged the battery, or the device itself. This may cause it to auto-fire—and you may need a replacement.
Flavour isn’t spice. In the world of spice, you can actually measure Scovilles to determine how hot a particular pepper is. Flavour isn’t as easy to calculate—there are no Scovilles for taste. Different people have different perceptions of flavour, too.
What does all that mean for this article? To be blunt, it means we can’t tell you what the most flavourful e-liquids are—there’s no metric we can use, no science. What we can do, however, is tell you which e-liquids we—and our customers—find the tastiest. We’ll do one liquid for each of 5 different categories: Minty, fruity, tobacco, and miscellaneous. Let’s dive into the juice!
This delicious mentholated mint salt nicotine from XTRA Salts is not recommended for winter use—it’ll give you chills in the middle of August! For those of you who are looking to get walloped by a frozen gust of minty flavour, we can’t recommend XTRA Salts - Minthol enough. It’s one of our best-sellers, and it comes in both 10 mg and 20 mg. Remember—this is a salt nicotine, so you don’t want to use it with a sub-ohm vape. We highly recommend this flavour!
There were a lot of different juices we considered for best fruit juice. You can’t go wrong with Fruitbae’s line—the Strawberry Kiwi, for example, is surprisingly juicy, and their Banana flavour packs a lot more punch than an actual banana.
The winner, however, has to be Mango Wango. This stuff is more flavourful than a glass of Tropicana. It’s refreshing, it’s mouth-watering, and it keeps us coming back for more. You’ll notice that there’s a cool—but not minty—flavour at the very end. We love how it adds to the overall experience and the contrast it creates with the juicy mango flavour.
Mango Wango comes in both salt and regular juices, and in a variety of different concentrations. We think it’s the perfect choice for anyone who loves juicy tropical flavours.
Great pud juice—a phrase that would be really unsettling if you didn’t know that we’re talking about vaping—can be hard to come by. You need to find the perfect balance of sweet and creamy—not overbearing, but still delicious.
TDaawg managed to do exactly this with their Dirty Daawg liquid. It’s a blend of some truly delicious flavours :butterscotch, butter rum, English toffee, and vanilla. The whole thing is beautifully balanced for a rich and complex flavour. When you’ve got a craving for something sweet, we heartily recommend this indulgent product from TDaawg.
The Dirty Daawg comes in both traditional and salt nic, so no matter what style vape you use, you can have a dog in this race. Want even more flavour? You can try TDaawg’s Dirtier Daawg, which has added banana flavour.
There are a lot of tobacco juices that we love: Rope Cut Salt’s Dark Thirty and Eco E-Liquids Virginia both come to mind. While these juices are delicious—and packed full of flavour—we wanted to pick one that offered pure, unadulterated tobacco flavour.
That’s why we’ve chosen yet another Salt NIX favourite for our list—the Northern Classic. This flavour was made with Canadian Blonde Tobacco, and its concentration and taste are perfect for emulating smoking a cigarette. This flavour is great if you’re looking to quit smoking. As with all salt nic products, it can’t be used in a sub-ohm vape.
This one is pretty wild—it tastes like Red Bull (though MOFO would probably never say so in its branding). We went for this option among a number of miscellaneously flavoured juices because it stands out—it really does taste like an energy refresment. We know that a lot of our clients are always on the lookout for wild new flavours, and this one fits the bill. It packs a punch, and it’s available in both salt and regular nic juices.
Today, you can find disposable vape pods in stores around the world. Pod vapes like STLTH are extremely popular in our stores - and throughout Canada. In this article, we’re going to discuss what makes them so popular. We’ll focus on a number of different factors, including usability, affordability, mass appeal, ease of access, and more.
That’s a lot to cover, so let’s get started!
In 2019, one of the biggest pod vape manufacturers in the world spent $104 million on advertising in the first half of the year! Just a few years later, a $439 million dollar verdict was levied against the company for its sales practices, in particular, because it was accused of marketing to children.
Ouch.
We’re going to be blunt about this: The marketing campaigns created by some disposable vape manufacturers play a huge role in the prominence of closed pod vapes in the current markets. It’s a real shame that these shady business practices have led to so much bad press around vapes because there’s plenty of evidence that vapes can be used as a harm-reduction tool.
That’s an article for another time, however. Let’s continue.
The most popular vapes before closed pod systems were probably box mods. To be honest, it’s hard to think of a less user-friendly device than a box mod. But that’s part of what makes box mods so fun—you can customize your juice, your coils, your atomizer, your everything!
While that’s a whole lot of fun—and there are many other advantages to box mods—it’s not easy to use by any stretch of the imagination. Contrast the level of knowledge a first-time user needs to use a box mod with the knowledge they need for a pod mod. With pod mods, you:
And boom—you’re vaping. The most complicated part of a pod mod is charging it. Once you’re done, you don’t even need to refill the thing—you just throw out the pod, then buy new pods. Environmentally friendly? Not at all. Easy to use? Incredibly.
Box mods can fit in one hand, but they don’t fit nicely in most pockets. Pod mods, on the other hand, fit very nicely in the palm of your hand. You can easily fit a pod mod in your pocket, go to a family gathering, duck outside for a couple of minutes, enjoy a smoke, then come back inside. With a box mod—it might not be as easy.
When you value discretion, pod mods win out again. With their small size, it’s much easier to be discreet with a pod mod than with a box mod.
A single-pod mod is a lot more affordable than a box mod. A hundred pod mods—well, you’re better off going with a box mod and some juice. Even with the cost of coils and other parts, box mods will end up being less expensive for regular smokers in the long run.
“In the long run” is the trick here. Sticker shock is a very real phenomenon. You can buy a STLTH device and plenty of pods for $30. Buying new pods for your STLTH device is cheap, too. Users are probably spending more money over a lifetime—but individual purchases feel like they cost less.
There are lots of great reasons to buy vape pods—they’re convenient, easy to use, and they’re more affordable as a one-time purchase than box mods. If you’re interested in stopping by to see what we have in stock, you can view our Winnipeg Vape Shop Locations at the link we just provided. We also offer box mods and a whole host of other vaping supplies!
]]>Tobacco and cannabis products in Canada are sold with an excise tax stamp. Now, vaping e-liquids will have the same stamp. This means that customers will need to pay additional taxes on vaping liquids containing nicotine.
The excise tax applies to all vaping e-liquids that are manufactured in or imported to Canada for intended use with a vaping device. The tax applies to all e-liquids but doesn’t apply to any vaping hardware that’s sold without e-liquid, such as replacement coils or chargers.
The excise tax for vape juice took effect on October 1, 2022. All e-liquids manufactured after this date will have the new stamp.
Tax rates are determined based on a millilitre basis. The new duty rates are as follows:
Provinces have the option to include taxes of their own in addition to the federal tax. Rates will vary based on each province and territory.
All new products are subject to this tax. However, existing stock can be sold at the price set before the tax was decided upon. E-liquids manufactured before October 1, 2022, can be sold at the original price until January 1, 2023.
Increasing taxes on vaping products is associated with higher cigarette use. It leads many consumers to wonder if vaping is still a cheaper alternative to smoking. However, based on the current data, vaping is still more affordable than smoking cigarettes for most consumers, even after the new tax is factored in. The cost of a carton of cigarettes outweighs that of a bottle of e-juice.
Cold Turkey provides a wide selection of premium e-liquids and hardware for vaping. All 5 of the company’s locations offer same-day delivery across Winnipeg. Cold Turkey’s product selection includes disposable vapes, traditional vapes, batteries, and e-liquids. To understand which e-liquids are best for DTL vaping, we first need to understand PG and VG.
PG and VG are the two main ingredients in e-liquids, and you’ll find them mixed at a variety of ratios.
PG is propylene glycol. It’s a thin, colourless, odourless, and flavourless liquid that’s used as a sort of carrier agent for the various flavours you’ll find in a given e-liquid. PG is also responsible for a harsher “throat hit”, which makes e-liquid with higher PG a popular choice among people who are quitting smoking.
VG is vegetable glycerin - it’s thicker than PG, and it has a slightly sweet flavour. The more VG you have in your e-liquid, the milder it will be. You’ll also end up with much thicker clouds. The downside? VG is less suitable for carrying flavour.
There are a number of reasons for this. First, you’re taking the hit directly to your lungs. That means the harshness of a higher PG ratio can lead to a very bad coughing fit. Second, DTL vapers are almost always chasing big clouds, and the more VG you have, the bigger the clouds you can make. Finally, high VG liquids take more heat to vapourize - and if you’ve got a sub-ohm vape, heat is exactly what you’re generating. A juice with a high PG ratio, conversely, might taste burnt in your sub-ohm vape.
Here are the ratios we recommend for DTL vapers:
You can find 60% VG / 40% PG, but many vapers find that ratio a little too harsh. 90%+ VG juices are available - they’re perfect for big clouds, but they hold little to no flavour. Opt for this ratio if you’re planning to participate in cloud competitions.
Another key component of any e-liquid is nicotine content. DTL vapers are taking much bigger hits than their MTL cousins. That means you should err on the side of caution and use e-liquids with lower nicotine content. Generally, you’ll want to stick between 0-6 mg/ml of nicotine if you’re DTL vaping.
Vaping too much nicotine at once can have serious consequences, ranging from hits that are way too harsh to nicotine poisoning. If you’re new to DTL vaping, start low.
At Cold Turkey, we pride ourselves on providing a wide variety of e-liquids for vapers of all kinds. Visit our website and shop online or view our Winnipeg vape shop locations and visit us in person. We can help you pick the perfect juice for your style, taste preferences, and more.
We hope this article helps you pick the perfect e-liquid, and we hope to see you soon!

Freebase liquid is any e-liquid containing freebase nicotine. Freebase liquids were the first e-liquids, and as you’ll soon learn, they’re still the liquids of choice for certain styles of vaping, like DTL.
To understand freebase liquids, you need to know about freebase nicotine. In its natural form, nicotine is a salt, and this salt is hard for the human body to absorb. By adding chemicals like diammonium phosphate, manufacturers can “deprotonate” nicotine, making it easier to absorb. This deprotonated nicotine is known as freebase nicotine.
Nicotine salt is nicotine that has not been deprotonated. Scientists have found ways of improving the absorption of nicotine in its salt form by using chemicals like citric acid. As you’ll soon learn, this new technique has led to the development of e-liquids with much higher concentrations of nicotine. E-liquids containing nic salts are simply called nic salt liquids or nic salt juices.
Freebase nicotine has problems. It has a very high pH, which means harsh throat hits. That’s all well and good when you want to emulate the feeling of smoking a cigarette, but it means you’ll almost never find freebase juice with more than 12 mg/ml of nicotine. Any more, and even the most seasoned cloud chaser would start hacking as soon as the vapour hit their throat.
Nic salts, on the other hand, contain acids that actually reduce the pH of the salt. This makes the throat hit much gentler, and you can find nic salt liquids with nicotine concentrations of 50 mg/ml.
You should choose nic salts if:
You should choose freebase nicotine if:
Freebase tends to come in a wider variety of different PG/VG concentrations, and more VG means bigger clouds. Vaping DTL with nic salts is almost impossible because the high concentration of nicotine can lead to nicotine poisoning when ingesting DTL.
Here at Cold Turkey, we have a variety of liquids containing both freebase and salt nic. Visit one of our Winnipeg vape shop locations or check out our inventory online. And if you’ve got any questions at all, don’t hesitate to call or message us - we’re always glad to help!
]]>With that in mind, if you find your tank is leaking, here are a few things you can do to fix the problem.
Disassemble your vape, then put it all back together again, carefully screwing in every connected component. Carefully is the operative word here - if the threads of two components aren’t properly aligned, you’ll end up with cross-threading, which leads to imperfect seals. And as you know, an imperfect seal leads to vape juice ending up in places it shouldn’t.
Why avoid over-tightening? Quite simply, over-tightening can lead to broken o-rings. O-rings are largely responsible for properly sealing the connections between your components, so if one cracks or breaks, you’ll almost definitely end up with leaks.
If you’ve over-tightened and broken an o-ring, you’ll need to replace it. Of course, over-tightening isn’t the only way an o-ring can break. Time may heal all wounds, but it also disintegrates all o-rings - so if yours are getting old, it could be time for a replacement.
Simply disassemble your vape and check all of your o-rings for damage and wear. They’re pretty easy to remove - a small flathead screwdriver usually does the trick for us. Once all of the damaged o-rings are out, replace them with new ones. Some tanks come with spares, but if yours didn’t, you can pick some up at a hardware store, or visit one of our locations - we often have some spares in stock.
The glass on your tank may be cracked - that’s the bad news. The good news? Glass is incredibly inexpensive to replace, and it’s easy to replace, too. If you’ve noticed a crack in your glass, swing by one of our locations - we’ll help you get it fixed in no time.
One of the main culprits of leaking vape juice? A chimney that ended up with juice inside it. Vape juice can end up entering into your vape’s chimney if you pour too carelessly. The chimney is, of course, not sealed (otherwise you wouldn’t be able to inhale vapour), so any juice that ends up in there is liable to end up leaking everywhere. Clean out your vape, but pay special attention to the chimney.
Vape manufacturers are getting better at leak-proofing all the time. We have a wide variety of high-quality vapes available on our online market - click here to take a look at them.
We hope this article has helped you to fix your leaking vape. We’ve also got tips to help you avoid vape leaks in the first place. If you’re interested in those tips, please let us know - if there’s enough interest, we might write an article on the topic in the future!
]]>In this short guide, we’re going to go over some of the ways that wattage affects e-liquids, as well as the vape itself. There’s a lot to cover, so strap in.
More wattage means more electricity flowing through your coil. Think about light bulbs - higher wattage light bulbs use more electricity and give off a brighter light. The same idea applies to vape coils - higher wattages flowing through them mean more energy, which in turn means more heat.
As you can imagine, the temperature of a coil affects how your vape will hit. Temperature also affects the lifespan of your coil. Let’s examine both of those points in greater detail:
A higher temperature means more juice is vapourized when it hits the coil. If you love huge clouds, try increasing the wattage of your vape.
When the wattage of your vape is increased, you won’t just get more vapour - you’ll get hotter vapour, too. That makes high wattage vaping a great choice for people who want to emulate the experience of smoking a cigarette.
Are you vaping cinnamon bun flavoured juice? You might want to increase the wattage of your vape. Pud-style flavoured juices tend to respond well to higher temperature coils - some people even report a greater depth of flavour when vaping at higher wattages.
Juice with menthol flavours, on the other hand, is usually best vaped with lower wattages. Menthol is meant to provide a cooling sensation, after all, and the contrast between hot vapour and a cool flavour can be off-putting for some people.
Of course, there’s no accounting for taste. You might love vaping menthol at super-high wattages, or prefer a cool sensation when you’re enjoying vanilla vape juice. Choose the wattage that makes each juice taste best to you.
Do you take long, deep hits? You might find that very high wattages lead to a burnt taste. After all, you’re running a lot of power through your coil.
You can reduce your wattage when you want to take very long hits. We also recommend a more open airflow ring for high wattage vaping - it will provide some cooling for your coil.
There’s a pretty simple correlation between wattage and coil lifespan: the higher the wattage, the more quickly your coil will burn out. Coils are actually rated for different wattages - for best performance (and a longer lifespan), try to vape within the wattage range of your coil.
More electricity going to your coil drains your battery’s power more quickly. No surprise here - expect to recharge your battery more often if you’re vaping at higher wattages.
Wattage may not be the only thing affecting your coil’s temperature. When some metals heat up, their resistance increases predictably - and more resistance means the relationship between wattage and temperature changes.
For Kanthal and nichrome coils, there’s no relationship between heat and resistance, so wattage should predictably increase heat. Other metals, on the other hand, may need to be vaped on temperature control (TC) mode instead of wattage mode in order to provide consistent heat.
We hope this guide has helped you understand the relationship between wattage and vaping! Do you have any other questions? Are you looking for new coils for higher wattage vaping, or maybe a whole new vape?
Keeping up with the maintenance of your vape is important in ensuring that it won’t be compromised during the vaping process. Try to make a habit of cleaning it to the best of your ability. Doing so will prevent any issues.
In order to rinse the tank, unscrew it from the battery, atomizer, or coil head. Remove any residue or gunk buildup within the tank by rinsing it thoroughly with warm water. You can add soap, but make sure your user manual says it is okay, as you don’t want to ruin your tank. Once you’re finished rinsing, use a soft cloth or paper towel to dab the tank. You can also let it dry overnight if you don’t need to use it right away.
If you’re vaping consistently, washing the coil is important in getting any residual traces of flavour from prior e-liquids, as this is where the juice gets burnt. Make sure you don’t overuse the same coil all the time. It’s recommended that you replace your coil once every 1 – 2 weeks if you use it daily. This part of the maintenance process is easy, as coils are quite inexpensive and easy to swap out.
After the coil change, make sure you prime it before you try the new flavour. Give the cotton wick enough time to soak in the juice. Doing so will prolong the life of your coil, as well as avoid any burnt vape hits.
While you have your tank cleaned, as well as the coil and wick, take care of the rest of your kit, too. Spend some time cleaning any residue from the drip tip, as you want to ensure that your next vape hit will be well produced.
It doesn’t hurt to have extra tanks at the ready; this way, you don’t always have to stick to one flavour - you can always have a different e-liquid waiting for you. As we mentioned, tanks are inexpensive. It’s great to have a few extra ones primed with different flavours; it will make changing between juices a lot easier.

]]>PG, also known as propylene glycol, is a thin, colourless, often flavourless and odourless liquid used as a base for vaping liquid. VG, also known as vegetable glycerin, is slightly thicker in consistency, with a sweeter flavour to it. These two are the two main ingredients in e-liquid, and when they’re combined, they create a vapour that carries the flavour and determines how strong your throat hit will be.
The PG carries flavour. Due to the liquid being thinner, any added flavours can be mixed with it, creating a more potent and intricate variety of flavour possibilities. The PG is what also provides, what vapers call, the throat hit. PG can give off a more “cigarette-like” throat hit, which makes it feel a lot more like smoking cigarettes.
VG, on the other hand, helps in creating a mild inhale and big clouds. Since it’s much thicker than PG, it takes a bit more power to vapourize. If you’re looking for more cloud consistency, going with a higher percentage can make for thicker and denser vapour. It doesn’t have the same throat hit as PG, making it a lot smoother to inhale.
It can be difficult to determine what the right ratio is for you when it comes to vaping. There are many ways to go about it, as it all comes down to preference. However, the standard VG to PG ratio is fast becoming 50:50. This percentage and blend are usually used by people with higher smoking habits, and it provides many features:
E-liquids are always packaged and sold in child-proof bottles to ensure that children don’t get into them. One main thing to keep in mind with vaping is nicotine. If you vape quite often, you may experience lightheadedness, which is commonly referred to as a “nic rush.” The feeling should pass, but you should take a break from the vape if you’re feeling nauseated.
