How Do Disposable Vape Pens Work?

Disposable vapes work on many of the same principles as traditional vape pens; they feature coils, wicks, vape juice, and batteries that are used to produce heat. The heat vaporizes the e-liquid, which is then inhaled through the mouthpiece.


The core difference between a disposable vape and a traditional vape is that you cannot add more liquid when you’re out; disposables are completely sealed. Many disposable vapes can also not be recharged (though some models can). 


Once your disposable vape is out of juice, it has to be disposed of. What To Look For When Choosing A Disposable Vape Pen

Quality Of The Device

Not all disposables are made equally. You can find cheap knock-offs online and even in substandard vape shops - but as the Guardian reported in the UK, these vapes can have banned ingredients, or contain high levels of lead, nickel, and chromium.

Portability is a major concern for a lot of people when it comes to vaping. Even if emulating the size of a cigarette is not important to you, having a vape that’s small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket may be important; it’s convenient to be able to vape when you want. 

Ingredients In The Vape Juice

Vape juice typically has four ingredients: Propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine, and flavourings (which contain sugar and other ingredients). The PG/VG ratios are typically not important for first-time users, but most disposables have ratios of 60/40, 50/50, or 40/60 - all ratios that provide a good balance of throat hit, smoothness, and cloud production.

Step 1: Check The Packaging

You’ve probably checked the packaging already to see what flavour your disposable vape is, and what the nicotine concentration is. Some other things you should check include:


  • Whether or not the disposable has the appropriate excise stamps (to check if it’s legal)

  • Instructions (different disposables are operated differently)

  • Features (like Turbo Mode or the equivalent) 

  • Whether or not the vape comes with a USB-C charging cable, or if it can be charged

  • The approximate number of puffs you’ll get

Step 2: Open The Device Carefully

Buying a disposable vape and then dropping it on the ground and seeing it break - not the most pleasant experience. Neither is accidentally slicing into your brand-new vape. Open the device carefully; most are sealed with an adhesive, and can then be opened from somewhere on the cardboard packaging without too much ripping, tearing, slicing, or cutting. 

Step 3: Activate The Battery (If Needed)

Some vapes are draw-activated; others are activated with buttons. Some buttons need to be held, while others need to be pressed repeatedly for the vape to activate. This is why it’s important to read the packaging before you start using your vape; the method used to activate the battery isn’t always obvious. 

Step 4: Inhale Gently To Start

Compared to cigarettes, vapes can have a much lighter throat hit; they’re also often designed to be mouth-to-lung. This means you should draw into your mouth gently and breathe in. Start very slowly, and see how it affects you - increase the length of your inhales afterward until you find a good balance between throat hit, vapour production, and comfort. 

Step 5: Understand Your Limits

Vapes deliver nicotine differently from cigarettes. Start slowly, see how the nicotine affects your system, then consider taking another hit. Don’t inhale for as long as you can; if you start getting dizziness, head rushes, or nausea, you’re taking too much nicotine, and you should slow down.

There are a few tips to help you properly store your first disposable vape pen (or any disposable vape, for that matter):


  • Store it in a cool, dry environment. No UV rays, no heaters.

  • Keep it upright.

  • Keep it away from areas that kids or pets can access.

  • Store it when the battery is charged (if it’s rechargeable).

  • Don’t overcharge the battery.
